The Lord taught me a delightful lesson as I preached chapter-by-chapter through the Gospel of Mark.  It was exhilarating to walk with Jesus from town to town and village to village.  I was captivated by the people He touched and the miracles He performed.  On one occasion I remember thinking, “Why did Jesus not explain more about science and medicine?”  When healing blinded eyes, why did He not tell us medically or scientifically why those eyes were closed to begin with?  The woman with the blood issue, what if he had told us the true medical reason that caused her disease?

It was at this time that I saw 2 Timothy 3:15-16 in a different light.  Paul explains to the young Timothy that all scripture is “…breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:15-16).  I have memorized this verse for many years, however, what was a different perspective for me was verse fifteen.  Paul explains the impact the sacred scriptures had on Timothy’s childhood.  Note carefully what Paul tells Timothy is the purpose of the scriptures.  He says they are, “…able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”

The Holy Spirit showed me so graciously that science is not the purpose of the Bible.  Neither math, history, poetry, nor medicine.  Although elements of all of these are found in the scriptures, they are not the purpose.  The ultimate, eternal, and redemptive purpose of the Bible is to make us wise unto salvation!

Note the last phrase of verse fifteen.  A person comes to salvation “through faith in Christ Jesus.”  Science does not produce faith; the Word of God does.  “So, faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17).  Can you see the spiritual logic?  All scripture is breathed out by God for what purpose?  To bring us to faith in Jesus Christ.  What does that faith in Christ produce?  Eternal salvation!
