Most of the miracles Jesus did in his earthly ministry took place along the shores of the Sea of Galilee.  Even today when visiting Israel, Christians love to go on the Sea of Galilee.  This famous body of water is only thirteen miles long and seven miles wide.  What makes it such an interesting place geographically is that it is six hundred-eighty feet below sea level, which means it is the lowest lying body of freshwater in the Earth.  Because it is so far below sea level and surrounded by mountains, it is prone to sudden and violent storms.

So it is in the Christian walk.  Our life can be prone to sudden and violent storms.  When Jesus calmed the Sea of Galilee in Mark 4, he made the disciples a promise in verse 35 that they would go to the other side.  Christian scholars tell us that there are some seven thousand promises in the Bible for today’s believer.  While disciples only had this one promise that they would make it to the other side, you and I have thousands of promises from God’s Word to hold onto.  Consequently, you and I are like the disciples.  We tend to forget the Master’s promise in the midst of the storm.

Speaking of the disciples, they were not new to the storms of the Sea of Galilee.  Most were experienced fishermen.  However, I do not believe this was an ordinary storm.  I believe this was a supernatural, and I will even argue, a satanic storm.  Why do I believe this?  Because verse 39 says Jesus rebuked the wind and spoke peace to the sea.  Mark uses the same Greek word for Jesus rebuking the wind as he does when Jesus rebuked the demons throughout the book of Mark.  The word rebuke means to be muzzled.  For this reason, I believe this was a supernatural, even satanic, storm.

The words of Jesus in verse 35 were very clear.  They would make it to the other side, but Satan did his best to prevent it.  Why?  Because of the miracles of chapter 5.  There would be a man tormented by demons that Jesus was to set free.  There was the woman with the issue of blood who would touch the hem of his garment, and there would be Jairus’ daughter, only twelve years old, who would die yet Jesus would raise her from the dead.  Do you know why Satan sends storms to your life?  It is to try to prevent what God is about to do.  No matter what strong wind  you face or troubled water that tries to fill the boat of your life, do not forget that Christ is with you.  He can speak peace to your troubled storms.  Hold to the promise of Jesus.  You will make it to the other side.
