Have you ever noticed how the Bible emphasizes days rather than years?  In today’s culture, we mark birthdays, anniversaries, and other celebrations by counting the years.  Scripture encourages us to number our days.  Why do you suppose this is?  This summer, my five-year-old son, Hudson, was looking forward to an out-of-town trip.  Each morning he would ask his mom, “How many days are left until we leave?”  I was amused one morning as he was getting the hang of counting down the days.  This is when the Holy Spirit reminded me of Psalm 90:12.

It is easy to let time slip through our fingers.  One year quickly turns into two, then five, and before you know it, a decade has passed.  Far too many people hold on to grudges, resentments, bitterness, and anger as the years pass by.  For those who would pay attention to Psalm 90:12, perhaps it would write a different story for their life.  “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”

When we pay closer attention to our days rather than years, the effect is a heart of wisdom.  For example, consider siblings who have allowed a wall of resentment to come between them.  If they would consider the instructions of Psalm 90:12, it would cause them to not waste the time they have left, but would soften their hearts and correct their actions.  Can you see how numbering our days brings wisdom to life’s decisions?

When we continue to look at Psalm 90, verse 14 tells us the outcome we can expect from a heart of wisdom.  It says, “Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.”  What a wonderful expectation the Lord has for His people.  At this moment, are you satisfied with God’s love or are you overwhelmed with life’s troubles?  As you count your days, make sure you are counting your blessings.  Be satisfied in the love God has for you, and the end result will be “rejoice and be glad” all your days.
