While the Bible doesn’t tell us how Joseph and Mary met, little did they know that their story would be part of changing the world forever.  Joseph and Mary were from a small town called Nazareth.  When you think small town, think even smaller, because Nazareth had a population of approximately 200 people.  Scholars believe it was comprised of about 20 extended families.  So you can imagine the rumors and gossip that Mary is pregnant while engaged to Joseph.

Scripture says that Joseph and Mary were betrothed.  It is difficult for our western culture to understand the legal ramifications of this statement.  While couples today fall in love and get engaged, betrothal was a far more serious commitment than a simple engagement.  Joseph and Mary were literally under contract to be married.  This is why scripture says Joseph was going to divorce her quietly.  While they had not yet had a wedding ceremony, their engagement was a legal contract for marriage.  (Matthew 1:19)

One can imagine the scandal and shame that would swirl around Mary and her family.  This is why Mary’s response to the angel’s announcement is stunning to me.  Luke 1:38 records Mary saying to the angel, “let it be to me according to your word.”  No matter what she faced, be it gossip or the loss of her soon-to-be husband, Mary was willing to face whatever challenges lay ahead to be obedient to God’s call.  Is this the prayer of your heart this Christmas season?  Can you invite God to do whatever He desires in your life?  Make Mary’s prayer your prayer, “let it be to me according to your word.”
