I was in my mid 20’s when I learned the truth of 2 Corinthians 9:8. I had planted Preaching Christ Church with less than ten people.  We were about five years in and had grown to the impressive size of less than fifty people.  I was young, single, and in way over my head.  Adding to the financial pressure, I had opened a Christian bookstore.  So here I was about twenty-five with an apartment rent, bookstore rent, and quite a large church facility’s rent.  I felt pressure like you could not believe, not to mention, three power bills, water bills, insurance payments, and on and on.  It felt like the bills were never ending.

However, the Lord taught me much in that season.  I remember praying so fervently one night and telling the Lord how I did not know what to do or how to make all this work.  This is when He led me for the first time to 2 Corinthians 9:8. I remember how my heart soared with faith when I read “…having all sufficiency in all things at all times, that you may abound in every good work.”

The Lord gave me specific instructions.  He said to print that scripture off and to put it in the binder where they logged our church offerings.  He said to print the scripture and put it inside the cash register at my bookstore.  He said to stand on the truth of it and to grow in my faith.  I did exactly as the Lord instructed. You would be amazed at how the smallest acts of obedience can trigger the greatest blessings down the road.  I survived that difficult season, and now today I am amazed at the resources God has placed in my hands, but I am even more amazed at how faithful His Word has been.

If you want God to bless you with all sufficiency in all things at all times, it is crucial to understand why.  Will He add to you so that you are comfortable in life?  No!  Will He increase you so that your heart may grow with pride?  God forbid! Paul tells the real reason for such sufficiency.  It is so you may, “abound in every good work.”  God does not want you to barely survive.  He wants you to abound in the good works He has created you in Christ Jesus to do (Ephesians 2:10).
