Jesus taught people are on one of two paths. He called it the broad road and the narrow road (Matthew 7:13-14). The first leads to eternal destruction, while the second leads to eternal life. I am always stunned when I hear people say, “All roads lead to Heaven.” I have had many people tell me, “As long as I am sincere, I will make it to Heaven.” I often ask the well-meaning people who say these things if sincerity matters when traveling? For example, where I live, Asheville, NC is to the east while Nashville, TN is to the west. If you and I get into a car and we drive east heading to Asheville, it does not matter how sincere we are in our hearts. The reality is, we are going in the wrong direction. In this case, all roads will not lead to Nashville!
We would do better to pray like King David did in Psalm 25:4, “Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.” Can you see the difference between the arrogance of pridefully saying, “All roads lead to Heaven,” and the humility of praying, “Lord teach me your paths?” I would far rather come to the Lord with a humble heart and attitude, and say, “Teach me.”
King David goes on to write in Psalm 16:11, “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” The path of life leads to eternal life. Can you see why Satan wants you to go your own way? He wants you to miss out on the joy of the Lord, and the pleasures God has for all eternity.
Which road are you traveling? As you are raising your family, building your career, or even enjoying retirement, no matter what stage of life you are in, is your soul on the broad road that leads away from God, or are you on the narrow way that takes you to Him? Proverbs 4:26 says, “Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure.” Can you say with certainty that you are on the path of righteousness? Eternity depends on your answer.
