Do you often worry about the future? Most people do. I think it’s quite human to worry about our health, our children, and the many other things beyond our control. It saddens me when I pray with people who have a dread of the future. I have had people tell me, “Cancer runs in my family, and I’ll probably die of cancer.” This is not the way Jesus teaches us to live.
He said in Matthew 6:25, “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?” Do you worry about everyday life? For most of us in today’s world, we do not worry about food and clothing. I think this scripture would tell us, do not worry about mortgage payments, college funds, and retirement. It is not saying we should be haphazard and not plan for the future. Rather, it is saying we should not worry. This means not allowing circumstances we cannot control to steal our peace and joy in the present.
I have great appreciation for F.B. Meyer. He was a marvelous Bible teacher and devotion writer who lived 1847-1929. He once wrote, “God is already in our tomorrows.” Isn’t that an amazing thought? Whatever we face, He already sees. Whatever needs lie ahead, He has already supplied. All the grace and strength we need is already there waiting for us. When you embrace Jesus, you can embrace your tomorrows. Meyer goes on to say, “All the tomorrows of our life have to pass Him before they can get to us.”
What should you do if you are someone who worries about the future? First, you should acknowledge that worry is a sin. Second, you should ask God to help you replace worry with faith. Someone once said, “Worrying is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do, but it doesn’t take you anywhere.” In other words, don’t get stuck on your faith journey. Lastly, if you acknowledge it is sin and you are replacing it with faith, don’t pick it up again. Go forward with God because He is leading you in your tomorrows.
