Do you feel stuck in life? If so, you’re not alone. A recent study shows that sixty-nine percent of Americans feel stuck in their daily routines. As a pastor, I find this statistic disappointing. A careful study of the Bible will show that God is in our daily routines. It is out of the mundane of ordinary life that God often does His greatest miracles, yet so many of us miss the exciting things God wants to do because we overlook and undervalue daily, ordinary life.
In the thrilling chapter of Deuteronomy 28, God promises extraordinary blessings upon His people. He explains in verse three that they can be blessed in the city or in the rural country. Verse four adds that the fruit of their womb, the fruit of their ground, the fruit of their cattle will all be blessed by His hand. God is saying He will bless their families, their agriculture, and their herds. In verse five, He promises to bless both their basket and kneading bowl. The basket represented their produce, and the kneading bowl represented their meal preparations. In other words, their daily provisions.
Then in verse six my favorite phrase is found in the chapter. “Blessed shall you be when you come in and blessed shall you be when you go out.” This verse speaks of your daily routine. I find this both fascinating and exciting. It tells me that God wants to be invited into my daily rhythms. God wants to be part of my ordinary and, at times, dull life.
God is so in tune with the typical, common, and everyday moments of our life that He knows when we sit down and when we rise up, and He knows our thoughts from afar (Psalm 139:2). Can you believe God is that involved and pays that close attention to our ordinary? When I consider these truths, it keeps me from feeling “stuck” in my daily routines. Instead, it excites me to invite God in and to watch for Him to work in my ordinary life.
